Learning Chinese Tips For Children, Including Pre Schoolers and Toddlers

First things first: Which Chinese to Learn?

Mandarin is the official language of China and Taiwan. It is the dialect of the majority in Mainland China and the Chinese overseas. Cantonese is not as commonly used since Britain's turnover of Hong Kong to China. It may become a dialect that is used among family and friends.or business purposes, Mandarin is more practical to learn.

Learning Chinese at Home

A great way to start your children in learning the Chinese Language is through Learn Chinese DVDs and videos and audio CDs. These DVDs are specially designed to optimally expose your child to the tones of Chinese with fun things to watch. The learning pace in DVDs are carefully programmed to help your child remember the words and phrases. Chinese songs on CDs on the other hand, are great to use while travelling or during your child's relaxation time. For bigger children, Chinese stories on CDs can be played to expose them further to more Chinese vocabulary and sentence construction.

If one parent speaks Chinese, arrangements can be made that 1 parent will speak to the children in Chinese and the other will speak to them in English. Kids have an amazing ability to keep up with each parent's language.

Exposing Children to Native Chinese Speakers

o Chinese tutors are available to teach children and even the entire family to speak Chinese. Check online or newspaper ads for available tutors.

o Play dates with children who are learning or already know Chinese is a fantastic way to expose your kids.

o Another option is to hire Chinese-speaking baby sitters. Local universities often have students who are half-Chinese or spouses of Chinese. This can be an option you can try.

o Other families get au pairs from China.

o Some families hire Chinese nannies to ensure the children grow up hearing the native Chinese tones. Be careful in the hiring though. Truth to be told, there is a large number of people in the US from China who don't have the necessary papers but are working as nannies. Nannies also take care of your children, so picking the right person is extremely important, especially if they live with you. Friends of ours have gone through multiple nannies and it was not a good experience.

Learning Chinese Online

There are online Chinese programs available for adult English speakers. So far, I am not aware if there are any online programs available for English speaking children.

Chinese Private Schools

Traditionally, non-public Chinese schools teach a child the Chinese language when the child is old enough to sit still and copy characters. Most schools still use the method of rote teaching used in China and Taiwan. Children in the US are very independent, therefore the rote method may not be the best way for children to learn the words and characters. Instead, the Montessori or ESL method may be used to interest the kids to learn Chinese. These methods place emphasis on using Chinese in conversation . Other programs that teach using a lot of singing and other fun activities will definitely make children learn Chinese easier.

Summer Camps

Chinese summer camps expose the child to full immersion of the Chinese language. Summer camps may be a weekend trip in the US, a full boarding school stay, or traveling to live for several weeks to China or Taiwan. There are few sites that produce the largest list of Chinese summer camps available so stay tuned for updates.

Learn Chinese Materials

There are a lot of products available in the market to help children learn Chinese. Books, videos, audio CDs/ cassettes and software can be used at home to learn Chinese. These materials not only expose the child to vocabulary or tones, but also show the beauty of Chinese culture. These materials can also be used for parents and children to spend time together.

Books

A big challenge to teaching Chinese from books is that one parent/ adult should know how to read it. For families who are starting to learn from scratch together, bi-lingual books are a big help. Story books that can be read along with audio CDs are useful to learn the proper pronunciation. A great introductory book to reading and writing Chinese characters is Long is the Dragon. For smaller children, I Won't Bite is a very interesting material. Kids will be able to touch and feel the different types of animal skin textures.

Videos

Videos teach through engaging visuals, songs, and repetitive vocabulary. Viewers will also be exposed to how different places and persons look like. In 1 DVD of the Follow Jade series, Teacher Jade goes to a Chinese Kindergarten. Children will be able to compare how their own school and classmates look like. The Bao Bei series has 5 enjoyable videos that teach Chinese vocabulary of a lot of common words. Bao Bei is a panda puppet that children will like to study Chinese words.

Audio CDs

Chinese CDs can be grouped into 2:

o 100% Chinese songs and stories. Some do not have printed guides, others include a book/ booklet

o Learn-Chinese CDs specifically designed for those learning Chinese as a second language. These CDs usually include books, booklets with Chinese, English and Pinyin. Songs are sung in both Chinese and English, or booklets show the English translations. For example, the songs in Teach Me Chinese Book and CD are popular and sung in both English and Chinese. Parents can also learn songs to sing for their children, such as Happy Birthday. This series also comes with a Teacher Guide. Other Learn Chinese Book and CD series such as Sing and Learn Chinese Series and Let's Sing Chinese also engages its listeners with interesting songs.

Software

So far, I am still waiting for a very highly recommended software that is easy for learners to use.

ChildBook has many free materials that children may use to enhance their learning of the Chinese language and culture. Use the Chinese coloring pictures/pages, crafts projects and instruction for games to show the children that learning Chinese can be fun. You can buy discounted Chinese textbooks and English Chinese learning videos at Childbook.com an online Chinese Book Store store.

Learn Chinese Pronunciation: the 80/20 Guide, Part 1

"I want to learn Chinese but just give me the basics!"

That's what this Chinese pronunciation guide is all about. It's all that you need to know about the pinyin system of Chinese pronunciation to get by.

The 80% that's important. (Spend 20% of time to learn the 80% that's important.)

To speak Mandarin, the first thing is to learn Chinese pronunciation of words using the system known as pinyin.

Pinyin is the Romanized Chinese phonetic system and is the most effective aid to learn Chinese pronunciation today. (Romanized means using English alphabets.) Pinyin was invented in the 1950's so that anyone, especially English speaking people, could learn Chinese pronunciation easily.

Most of the letters in pinyin have the same sounds as letters of the alphabet - with only a few exceptions. It's really a very practical system that reduces the time it takes to learn Chinese words.

Can you imagine an English speaker trying to pronounce Chinese characters without pinyin?

First, "The Four Tones" of Chinese pronunciation

Chinese is a tonal language. This means each Chinese character is a syllable with a fixed tone. A different tone is a different Chinese character and hence a different meaning. To learn Chinese, you'll have to learn Chinese characters individually.

Chinese pronunciation involves four tones, each indicated by a tone mark. The tone marks are placed over the vowels. (If the letter "i" has a tone mark over it, the dot is removed."

First Tone: a high, level tone represented by "-" as in mā 妈 "mother"

Second Tone: a rising, questioning tone represented by "/" as in má 麻 "to have pins and needles"

Third Tone: a drawling tone falling then rising represented by "v" as in mǎ 马 "horse"

Fourth Tone: a sharp falling tone represented by "" as in mà 骂 "to scold"

Each syllable is written as a combination of consonants and vowels, plus the tone mark. Some syllables don't start with consonants. And the only consonants that come after vowels are are the nasal "n" or "ng".

(From here on, I'm just going to use 1, 2 3, 4 to represent the four tones in Chinese pronunciation.)

You can see the importance of getting the tones right when you learn Chinese pronunciation to avoid misunderstandings and comic situations.

A friend of mine just learnt the Chinese words for "secretary" "mi4 shu1" and instead said "mystery book" "mi2 shu1". I bet you've heard stories like that of people.

It will take some time to get the tones right because they're not "natural" to English speakers. Do your best when to pick up the tones when you learn Chinese, but don't be deterred. Eventually you'll get it. But just so you know, you don't have to be perfect.

I have American friends living in Shanghai who get by fine with a flat tone. Of course, breakdowns in communication arise now and then, but the Chinese people can see you're a foreigner learning the Chinese language (i.e. their language) and they'll try hard to make sense of what you say.

So, they're doing all the "hard work"!

Chinese Language Lessons For Beginners - Is It Hard To Learn Chinese?

Frequently I have heard my students or anyone who is interested in learning Mandarin complaining: "Learning Chinese language is so hard, I can't even pronounce properly and the characters are complicated compare to English." Yes I agree that Chinese is hard, but the hardest thing I found is to get the learning process started effectively, and achieve a good foundation of basic knowledge and skills. Then once a student is on the right track, learning Chinese becomes much easier the more you study.

May I suggest some key ideas to make things easier for the first time learners?

First of all, for the basics, there are 4 tones in Mandarin Chinese, and each character needs to pronounce with 1 of these 4 tones. Without knowing this, pronouncing Chinese can be very difficult. If you want to master the pronunciations of Chinese characters, then learning and practicing the tones is one of the keys.

Second, the pronunciations of Mandarin Chinese language are represented with alphabets written in Latin, which is called Pinyin. That's why so many people find Chinese names written in English hard to pronounce, because you need to pronounce them as Latin instead. So the hard part is actually to remember the Latin pronunciations of English letters, and use them to pronounce each and every Chinese character with the tones, when they are written in Pinyin.

The Chinese characters themselves are unable to be pronounced directly, because they were evolved into a language from ancient drawings in the last 5000 years. To pronounce a Chinese character, you must know its Pinyin - alphabets written in Latin letters, together with its tones. And then when you memorize a Chinese character, you need to remember what it looks like, how does it pronounce with the correct tone, and what does it mean. This may sound hard at the beginning, but with practice, you can easily increase the speed to 10 characters per day. I would suggest learning the characters in the form of words and sentences, so that you can relate and practice what you have learned immediately, even if you are learning at the speed of 1 sentence per day. If you persist the learning process long enough, eventually you will be able to master more than 2000 Chinese characters in a year's time, or in other words, 300 sentences, which is enough for basic everyday conversations.

In terms of writing Chinese characters, I would recommend not to pursuit this skill at the beginning. The reason being that: unless this skill is absolutely needed, you can type Chinese characters on a computer using Pinyin, which is much easier. However, to learn the writing skills, you will need to study the components and the structures of Chinese characters first, and then practice the hand writing on paper. This can increase your efforts of learning Chinese tremendously, and can take years of dedication to master the skill. While we are living in a digital age now, learning to type Chinese characters is much easier and more effective.

If you have gone this far and spend all the efforts to learn and practice Chinese language, then things become much easier for you. All you need to do is learn more Chinese characters each and every day, and practice them when you have a chance. The grammar in Mandarin is much simpler compare to English; all you need is to put the characters together in a proper way to form a sentence. Finally, I wish you have a great experience learning Chinese language, and maintain a long term substantial passion and efforts for your study.

Learn Chinese Now For Travel, Business, and Joy

Most people recognize that there are real and tangible benefits for those who learn Chinese now. Chinese has a reputation as a difficult language for English speakers to learn, however, this has been much exaggerated. Chinese is in reality a fairly easy language to learn, especially for those who are willing to speak and listen to native speakers of Mandarin Chinese. The benefits for those who get up their courage, set goals, and take action are numerous.

If you learn Chinese now, you'll be able to travel in a way that others are not. If you have ever visited Asia, you understand that the inability to speak the language limits you in terms of the connections that you're able to make with other people. When you speak English in a place like China or Taiwan, people immediately label you as a tourist. On the other hand, if you speak to Mandarin Chinese speakers in their own language they see that you have made the effort to connect with them, and they see you as a friend.

Think about the way that this cultural trend extends to business ventures. The reason that so many businesses demand people who are fluent in both Mandarin Chinese and English is because they are able to act as liaisons and build trust in business partnerships. If you learn Chinese now, you will not only be able to engage with people that you meet while traveling, but you position yourself at the forefront of emerging and expanding job market. If you have any interest in Asian business, there is no reason not to learn Mandarin.

One reason to learn Chinese now that most people don't think about, is that there exists in China an entire media culture that is misunderstood or neglected within Western countries. The deepest cultural experience that most of us have had with Chinese culture is watching "crouching Tiger hidden Dragon". Isn't that a little sad?

If you learn Chinese now, you can understand not only contemporary Chinese media in terms of movies, television, and books but connect with the literature of all Chinese history. Can you imagine yourself reading and understanding the poetry of the T'ang Dynasty? It is not as impossible as you might think.

There are so many benefits for those who learn Chinese now, and it is amazing that so few are really doing it. All it takes is a little planning, some positive visualization, and a lot of speaking. Absolutely anyone can learn Mandarin Chinese, so why aren't you doing it?

However, most of them will not act to fulfill their dreams. For whatever reason, they are too afraid to plan, to act, and to see the results.

Maybe you're familiar with the book "the secret". I'm not a fan, and I don't like things that trip too far into what I would call "new age". However, there is a solid and practical message in that book. We all have dreams. We all have goals. But most people are unable to visualize the steps that must be taken in order to achieve them. If you dream of learning Chinese, let me walk you through what you can do to learn Chinese now.

Look into options for Chinese learning software. I personally recommend Rocket Chinese as a great system that can guide you through the steps it takes to learn Chinese. However, you should know that there are hundreds of resources available for free through the Internet that can allow you to teach yourself Chinese. It's entirely possible to learn Chinese now without spending a single cent.

For example, it is easier than ever to arrange for a language exchange with a native speaker of Mandarin Chinese. In exchange for a short lesson in English, you can receive a free language lesson in Mandarin Chinese. This is how people learn Chinese fast. If you speak regularly to a native speaker you will discover that you can learn any language much faster than by reading and memorizing from a book. This is how languages were meant to be learned. With a little courage, a little memorization, and a lot of speaking, it is easier than ever to learn Chinese now.

Remember that if you want to learn Chinese now, the first thing that you have to do is take action. This is the first step that most people never get past. Can you visualize yourself ordering fried rice from a Chinese restaurant in Taiwan? Can you see yourself walking along the Great Wall of China, and explaining to others in Chinese who you are and where you are from? It is possible. It is even practical. But first you need to visualize the steps you need to take, and then take action.

If you begin, you've already come farther than most people will ever go. But, you want to make it all the way to fluency. If you want to learn Chinese fast, you need to differentiate yourself from the Chinese language learners who fail. Make sure that you plan your language learning. Set realistic goals for yourself and check your progress regularly. Lastly, take the initiative to speak as much as humanly possible. Before long, you will find that your goals will rise to meet you.

Anyone can learn Chinese easy with the right habits and tools. It also takes a little bit of motivation and cleverness.

To learn Chinese easy you must recognize the power of consistency. This is simply because the brain works a specific way. Short-term and long-term memory are related and have a specific relationships such that we can be absolutely sure that it is more efficient to study something in short sessions over a long period of time than to cram for a long session in a short period of time. In other words, everything your high school teachers told you is true. This is actually great news for you if you're a busy person and have little time to learn Mandarin. A half hour or 45 minutes a day is all it takes to become fluent in conversational Chinese. If you are specifically concerned and want to learn Chinese fast, you can increase this amount to little bit, but make sure that you don't get discouraged.

Those who learn Chinese easy develop techniques with which to immerse themselves in the language as fully as possible. This means surrounding yourself with Chinese whenever you have the opportunity, and making sure that you use small increments of time (like waiting in the doctors office) to further your Chinese learning. This ties in with the theory of the brain. The more often you repeat something throughout the day, the greater the chances are that you will remember it.

The best way to learn Chinese easy is to find opportunities to speak to native speakers of Mandarin. Chinese people are usually very friendly and eager to share their language. They are equally eager to learn English, or improve their English conversation abilities. Language exchanges are a great way to teach English in exchange for lessons in Mandarin Chinese.

Anyone can learn Chinese easy by following the well trodden path of great language learners in the past. Learn from the ways that others have learned languages and you can learn Mandarin easy while having a great time doing it.

Learning Chinese For Young Children Including Preschoolers and Toddlers

Native Speakers for Teaching Chinese

One method for those households that don't have a native speaker is the hiring of a nanny who speaks Chinese. The NY Times had an article noting the increase in au pairs from China. It is also possible to arrange play dates with other children who are learning Chinese as well as finding a Chinese speaking babysitter. Local universities will often have spouses of Chinese working on Masters and PhD's who are looking for extra income. Another option is finding a local nanny, and there are a number around. If you are in public service, please remember Zoe Baird on the requirements for legally hiring a nanny. Truth to be told, there is a large population of people in the US from China who don't have papers who work as nannies, so be careful. Nannies are also taking care of your children, so picking the right person is extremely important, especially if they live with you. Friends of ours have gone through multiple nannies and it was not a good experience.

Private Chinese Schools

Traditionally non-public Chinese Schools in the US start teaching children when they are old to sit still and copy characters. Most schools are still using traditional teaching rote teaching methods still used in Taiwan and China. For the most part with children in the US, it does not work due to culture classes. There is a huge amount of independence in children in the US and using boring teaching methods that do not capture the interest of the child so they want to go to school without a lot of parental pushing will end up in failure. With the child being forced to go to school and often treating it as just babysitting, and not learning Chinese.

An alternative is finding a school that uses more of a Montessori Method or what is used in ESL where there is a lot of conversation. I was pleasantly surprised by my daughter's public school language teacher who spoke of using this method in the classroom, instead of the traditional focus on grammar in learning many foreign languages. At a young age, I would suggest programs that teach using a lot of singing and other fun activities.

Chinese Learning Products

CD's for Learning Chinese

CD's come in two different types. One is products that are 100% Chinese of Chinese Children Songs or stories only in Chinese. Some products include a book of lyrics in Chinese, and other's don't. Other products are designed to teach Chinese and have a booklet with lyrics in English, Pinyin, and Chinese Characters. The teaching Chinese products are both from from the US (the majority) and a series from Singapore. The products for Teaching Chinese are bilingual, so the songs are sung in both Chinese and English. What I like about the CD's is they give a parent a chance to be part of the process where they can Sing Happy Birthday in the Teach Me Chinese CD and Book in both English and Chinese (this series focuses on popular songs in Chinese and English). The other series have specially written songs for Teaching Chinese. The Teach Me Chinese Series has Teacher Guides available. The Sing & Learn Chinese CD & Book includes a track of the songs without words (like Karoke). Let's Sing Chinese is a 3 product series from Singapore that has both familiar songs and new ones. 3 is the most I have seen of any series of Cd's for Teaching Chinese to Children.

Video's for Learning Chinese

Video's such as from Mei Mei use more of a hands on approach teaching basic vocabulary and she currently has five video's in her series. From the first one that teaches counting and parts of the body with songs through an approach that children love to later ones that progress such as her Play and Learn Chinese with Mei Mei where an actual Chinese Kindergarten is visited. What is great about this video is it gives your Child the chance to compare their experience and see the differences between their school and the one in the video. From lunch to PE to naps. To select the right video for your child, I recommend reading the reviews (both good and bad).

Books for Learning Chinese

A great book for those just beginning to Learn Chinese is I Won't Bite. It's a touch and feel book that has Pinyin, Chinese Characters, and English. The challenge of using a book is often you need to know how to read Chinese, in order to teach from it. A fun book for exposing Children to Chinese Characters is Long Is A Dragon by Peggy Goldstein A selection of books for Learning Chinese Character

Korea Secretary Official - You Must Learn Chinese Classical Knowledge In Order to Learn Chinese Well

Lu Shaoying, the secretary of South Korea diplomatic business department, is a "Goddess of Chinese language" in Korea. This is because she can not only speak Chinese well, but also has ability to master the minds of other people when she is communicating with them.

What is her secrets to learn Chinese?

"When I was a child, I especially like reading. I entered overseas Chinese school at 7."When she was very little, his father who cares for China let her know about the rising of China.

In overseas Chinese school, she started to learn Chinese. She practiced reading and writing time after time, and then started to recite Chinese book. Starting from grade 2,she learned the poems of Tang dynasty and Ci of Song dynasty. And she studied the some Chinese famous article in high school. During the time she stayed in oversea Chinese school, she was dreaming of becoming a diplomat when she grows up.

"Chinese people don't like to express their emotion and they like subtle way to speak. You can communicate with them only through understanding their culture and political background."

She stressed that one must learn Korean well before he start to learn Chinese. If the base of your mother tongue is not strong, there is a limit to the improvement of you foreign language.

Lu Shaoying persisted in keeping a diary with Chinese everyday. She always maintains that one must not be afraid of failure and must immerse in the language exercises.

She said: if you want to lift your low Chinese level to high grade level. you must learn about Chinese lines in the past and that are popular in the street. The classical knowledge is especially important. If you want to have deep dialogue with the people who have higher education, Chinese classical knowledge is necessary. Learning popular Chinese language is the best way to understand Chinese culture. Because the language in one place is different from other places in China, mastering the dialects of major areas is very important.

"The dialects' question is very difficult in various Chinese tests. I had once ever help a Chinese interpreter in Sino-Korea high level meeting. At that time, she didn't understand what a Chinese top level official said and she was very nervous. That Chinese official spoke with the tone of Canton dialect. My roommate was form Hongkong when I studied in Taiwan and I benefits from it."

She think that Chinese is not a language one can learn well within a year or two. The more you study Chinese, the more it becomes difficult. You have to persist in learning Chinese at lease for 3 years. She thinks Korea belongs to Chinese characters' circle. Therefore, it is most advantageous in the world for Korean to learn Chinese.

She point out, "It is not overstating that Chinese mainland and Korea will integrate as unitive life circle. Because Chinese status is becoming higher and higher in international community and developing potential of Sino-Korea relationship is huge. China is a land full of opportunities for us and it is a partner deserve intercourse well."

Learn Chinese - What You Need to Know

I'm a real languages fan and the latest language project I'm working on is to learn Chinese. So far I'm really enjoying the experience and last year I even went to China to test out my skills - as it's also important to learn the culture with the language! For those thinking about learning Chinese, here are a couple of important things I wish I knew when I started.

Learn Chinese - But Which Dialect?

Whilst I specifically learn Mandarin, the standard dialect of Chinese that most people speak, different regions have different dialects. The differences between some are really not too big (e.g. Beijing Chinese and Singapore Chinese) but others are almost a completely different language altogether (e.g. Mandarin and Cantonese). Some dialects are only spoken, and use mainstream Chinese characters for writing with. It's best to target your dialect to where you think you'll visit. For Hong Kong and Macau you'll probably want to learn Cantonese instead of Mandarin. Whilst most people in these regions learn basic Chinese Mandarin, you'll find that you can communicate a whole lot more effectively in the real local language. If you just want to learn Chinese for the fun of it, learn Mandarin for sure.

Do I have to learn characters?

No! The beauty of learning Chinese nowadays is the presence of Hanyu Pinyin, or Pinyin for short. If you just want to learn spoken Chinese, there's still some writing involved, but you won't be writing characters. Hanyu Pinyin is the international standard for romanisation of Chinese characters. Pinyin was invented to help foreigners learn Chinese and occasionally school children learn it as well - however most Chinese will not understand you if you try to write Pinyin - they associate characters with the sounds that we would associate to the romanised Pinyin. For example:

The simplified Chinese character for I (as in me) is (if you can't see this character you might need to install a language pack).

The Pinyin for the character is 'Wo3'. Written (as opposed to typed) Pinyin is different - the written Wo3 has a small 'u' on top of the O, indicating how to say the word to distinguish it from other 'Wo's.

If you simply wrote 'Wo' most Chinese would not understand you. If you said 'Wo' they would.

There are two different character systems, aren't there?

Yes, there is Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese. Simplified Chinese is much easier to learn than Traditional Chinese (less complicated characters, etc.). Traditional Chinese is now only used in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. The Chinese government redeveloped the character system in the 20th century to produce simplified Chinese, which is now the standard in most parts of China and in some international Chinese communities. Depending on where you plan on travelling, you should target the character system you learn if you decide to learn written Chinese.

How long will it take me to learn Chinese?

It all depends on many factors, like frequency of study, the effort put in and whether you hear people around you speak Chinese fluently regularly. However, at an hour a day, to learn intermediate Chinese should take about six months to a year.

A Few Tips to Help You Learn Chinese Fast

If you are planning on going to China, then you better get ready and start studying the Chinese language. Chinese may be a difficult language to learn, but it's not the hardest language to learn. Even if you do plan on studying Chinese in China to immerse yourself, it is pretty hard to learn the language if you do not even know the basics on how to learn Chinese fast. So here are a few tips to help get you started.

First of all, do you know Hanyu Pinyin? The Hanyu Pinyin is a system that can help you learn Chinese fast. Basically, Hanyu Pinyin roughly translates to sound and spelling. It is simple, yet effective concept that is very effective in teaching you the basics of the Chinese language. This system makes use of letters in the Roman alphabet to teach people the Chinese language. This is very important. One of the most important elements of the Chinese language is pronunciation. A slight mispronunciation can give a word a totally different meaning, so start with the Hanyu Pinyin system to avoid misunderstanding.

Next, you have to be observant. When you are in an area filled with Chinese people, always take note of how they speak. In order to effectively grasp the essence of the language, be sure to look and listen. This may sound funny, but try listening to Chinese songs on the radio and then imitate and try to follow the lyrics of the song. To make learning a bit more entertaining, watch Chinese movies with English subtitles. You will be able to hear the actors speak and then understand what they are saying. Say the lines that they are saying in the movie. Take note of important words and phrases that you might find useful when interacting with Chinese speaking people. Memorize these words and phrases and remember to always say them out loud so that you will never forget. This is a very effective and fun way of learning Chinese. Some people actually started to learn Chinese fast by simply watching movies.

The third and most important tip is to keep on practicing the Chinese speech. There is no point to learning if you do not practice. It's just like studying mathematics. If you know the formulas, but do not practice all the time, you will still find it difficult to solve certain problems. This is true when it comes to learning the Chinese language as well. If you want to really excel in studying Chinese and you really plan on interacting with Chinese people, then start speaking the Chinese and practice every single day. By simply practicing how to speak Chinese every day, you will be able to learn Chinese fast. You will find it easier to speak the language because you are already used to speaking it. You will be able to speak Chinese fluently in no time! To hasten the process it is a good idea to look for Chinese tutors so that they can correct you when you go wrong.

Did You Know Learning Chinese Can Be Easy and Fast?

Learning Chinese is far easier than you may have ever thought if you choose an effective method. For beginners, it is very efficient and cost-effective to have courses based on multimedia such as audio and video, which would provide much better interactive experience than a textbook. The pattern of learning process is listening, repeating and comparing. In this process, you will acquire perceptual knowledge about the tones and syllables of spoken Chinese. It is also important to improve your pronunciation by recording yourself and comparing it with the standard pronunciation. In this way, you can quickly teach yourself basic sentences for daily conversation. You may think that there is still a long way to go before you can communicate in Chinese freely. However, this quick-to-start method of learning Chinese will provide a lot of opportunities for you such as more convenient to travel in China and easier to make a Chinese-speaking friend. What is more, the confidence of speaking Chinese will be built up. As a result, your progress in learning Chinese will be like a snowball, increasing naturally.

The Chinese character system, which governs reading and writing Chinese, is difficult to master in a short period of time. If you are eager to see rapid progress, to start from Hanyu pinyin, the Romanized version of standard spoken Chinese should be a good idea. According to this phonetic instruction system, the pronunciation of every Chinese syllable is precisely determined by three elements: the initial consonant, the vowel as well as the appropriate tones. Therefore, if you know how to use Hanyu pinyin, you can memorize the Chinese vocabularies you learn by writing down their pronunciation without memorizing any Chinese characters. By this way, increase of your vocabularies will be rocket fast, so that you can even write a personal letter or instant message to a native speaker after a few months' Chinese study. Besides, with correct Hanyu pinyin, you can find the correct Chinese Characters in most Chinese-input systems. The skill of inputting Chinese through Hanyu pinyin is powerful when you aim to searching a new word in the online translation system and teaching yourself Chinese using your own language. That is why it is very important to find Chinese study materials with Hanyu pinyin attached to the Chinese Characters.

Additionally, Learning Chinese should be fun, otherwise you would not have motivation to learn it in the long run. So ask yourself what could be the factor that most interests you to learn this language. Focusing on the area you are interested in will definitely speed up your learning significantly. For example, if your interest is Chinese culture, it would be so much fun for you to memorize the words associated with the Chinese cultural element, such as names of the Chinese traditional festivals. As you can see above, by choosing a right method, learning Chinese is so much easier. For more suggestions about how to pick up Chinese efficiently and naturally, check out the following website, http://www.chineselearningfast.net

The Joy and Challenge of Learning Chinese

Imagine being able to speak a language that has been in existence for thousands of years and will allow you to converse with more than a billion people instantly. Imagine yourself as someone who can speak a language that takes a great departure from your own. Learning Chinese is a very rewarding experience because Chinese is not just one of the official languages of the United Nations, it is a language that bridges cultures from the Vietnam to Japan.

Did you know that the Japanese and Korean writing systems are based on the Chinese writing system of characters? Chinese is actually a family of languages that consists of several dialects, some of which are unintelligible to one another due to the phonetics and tones of Chinese. Nevertheless, today Chinese has achieved a form of standardization and most Chinese and foreigners use the Chinese dialect, Mandarin, to communicate effectively in all walks of life.

Aside from Mandarin, other dialects remain in popular use today such as Cantonese which can often be heard in the Chinatowns across the world. Mandarin though, will serve you best in learning Chinese due to its prevalence and adoption as the standard form of Chinese. Today, Mandarin is spoken by about 850 million in China while the Wu dialect is spoken by nearly 90 million followed closely by Cantonese (70 million).

Learning Chinese will prove challenging for those who are learning it as a second language. The challenge of speaking Chinese is that it takes quite a departure from the phonetics of Western languages. With Chinese the tone and inflection of syllables, vowels, and all manner of sounds can create whole new meanings for a word. Take your time learning Chinese. It is fun and always remember that challenges are windows of opportunity.

But first, know that there are three aspects of the Chinese language that you will need in order to be well on your way to mastering the language. They are:

1.Tones

2.Characters

3.Sentence Order

Tones - Focus your time and energy most on learning the tones of the Chinese language. Believe it or not the tones are the fundamental aspect of learning Chinese. Learning the tones can mean the difference between wanting to kiss someone or asking them a question. The Chinese family of languages is distinguished by its "tonal" element. Remember that tones are super important. Why? Did you know that Mandarin speaking Chinese people are nearly unintelligible to Cantonese speaking people due to the variance in tones?

Characters - There are thousands of character for the Chinese language. Find out which ones are in use today and focus on those. The older characters are best learned as stepping stones to a complete understanding of Chinese. Nevertheless, your time will be best spent o learning the characters that are in use today.

Sentence order - Chinese is a pretty flexible language. Yet, the order of sentence construction is still important. One of the noticeable mistakes that learners make is placing numeric values such as time in the wrong order in their sentences. Remember that Chinese is primarily spoken by native speakers so they are used to hearing a certain order within a sentence. Practice makes perfect.

Have fun learning Chinese. Know what you want to get out of the language. Why do you want to learn Chinese? Do you want to learn Chinese to converse with a friend, for business or to master one of the world's great languages?

Learning Chinese in Taiwan - My Experience

When I first arrived in Taiwan to teach English, I had already taken several courses in university on Mandarin Chinese. I had done well in those courses and enjoyed them very much. I thought that maybe I would be able to begin conversing immediately with Chinese speakers and improve my Chinese in the process. I was excited.

However, as soon as I became immersed in the overwhelming environment of Taiwan I became afraid to speak. Seeing all of the signs written in Chinese, constantly overhearing long streams of spoken Chinese that were incomprehensible to me, and seeing the effortless fluency of some foreigners who had been there for a while, I began to feel very differently about my Chinese speaking ability. Things felt very different outside of the classroom.

And so when I went to Starbucks, or ordered at a restaurant I spoke only English except for a polite "xie xie" or "thank you" to waiters and waitresses, and an occasional polite "Ni Hao". I occasionally wondered whether my university courses in Mandarin Chinese had been a waste.

What really happened to me was what happens every day to Chinese language learners. I became afraid and overwhelmed at the foreignness of the language, and did not stop to consider the fact that with a little more practice and a little more courage things would begin to make sense. Being paralyzed with fear, I was limited in my ability to interact with Chinese people.

Something happened a few weeks later. I had spent a lot of time in public, and the sound of spoken Chinese was becoming more ordinary to me. Despite the fact that I had not been practicing my Chinese, and I had not consulted my vocabulary flashcards, I began to notice in the long streams of unbroken Chinese, some words that I recognized from my courses in university. At first, I heard only one word. "Dianhua" - telephone. After that, I began hearing other words. Sometimes, I would hear a couple of words in one sentence.

So I got out my flashcards, and looked into an online program for learning Chinese called Rocket Chinese. More and more words began to stand out to me. I started studying Chinese characters and even began to be able to read small blocks of text in the advertisements I would see outside my window. It might seem ridiculous, but I felt an intense sense of victory. I could not carry on a conversation, and most Chinese was still indecipherable to me, but I had a feeling. I developed the conviction that with consistent practice and a careful ear, that the Chinese language would come into focus for me.

When I really began speaking in Chinese to Chinese people I met, the smiles that I received in return were a fantastic reward for the work that I had done in learning the language. It was a great feeling to order food from a restaurant in Chinese, or to make a comment about the weather to the lady who works at the bank.

I still have not mastered Chinese. I would say that I have a moderate degree of fluency. My reading is still especially poor. However, I feel very strongly that the reputation Chinese has as a difficult language is undeserved, and that it comes into focus for anyone who is willing to listen to it and attempts to speak it. I hope that others will not be paralyzed by fear as I was, but embrace opportunities to speak. I hope as well that many others will feel the same intense sense of small victory that I felt. Chinese is a fascinating language and a rewarding one to learn, and absolutely anyone can learn it.

Ten Useful Tips For Learning Chinese

A lot of people ask me about how to learn Chinese faster. Frankly speaking, there is no shortcut in learning language, but I have some useful tips for you on how to learn Chinese easier. Making all these tips a habit of your daily study will definitely lead you to success with less time.

1. Practice as much as you can. When you walk by your house, try to practice your Chinese with everything you meet, such as chair, table, bed, door and so on. Ask yourself "Are you hungry?" or "What time is it now?'' in Chinese and repeat the sentence patterns and phrases you learned.

2. Pay attention to communication in Chinese, not merely voice. When talking with Chinese people, try to observe their shape of mouth and how they use their tongue to pronounce. Sometimes you find it difficult to distinguish what one says, but you may understand the meaning by watching, because some people use body language to communicate.

3. Keep track with news in China everyday. Keep an eye on what happens in China everyday no matter what the source language (It is better in Chinese) is. On one hand you could directly practice your Chinese in this process, on the other hand you could expand you knowledge of China which is very helpful for one to better understand Chinese. By doing this you will find it more effective than studying for a long period at one time.

4. Find your own way of learning Chinese. Buy some Chinese language DVD's and watch them with English subtitles, then watch them again later with Chinese subtitles. If you are an advanced learner, I recommend you watching these movies without subtitles. Although you could not completely understand, you may become more sensitive when using it.

It is not only a good way to expand your social life, but also an effective way to learn Chinese. Learning Chinese by chatting with your language partner is faster than merely learning in the class.

8. Review what you have learned before go to sleep. Someone find it difficult to memorize all he learned on the class. It a good habit to review your previous learning. But if you do not have time to do so, be sure to review the outline and key points of what you have learned before going to sleep.

9. Read your study material loudly. When you are to read the textbook dialogue, newspapers, novels, magazines or articles on the Internet, do so by reading out loud, rather than silently. Don't be shy and worry about saying them correctly. It will perfect your tones and enrich your vocabulary rapidly.

10. Memorize Chinese characters by splitting into component. Each Chinese character can be broken down into component parts. Identify the components and use these to build an image of the characters meaning. And the phonetic component will give you a hint to how the word is sounded.

How Do I Learn Chinese the Easy Way?

If you're asking, "How do I learn Chinese without spending a lot of money," the answer is in the right software program. Regardless of what you might hear about five year old kids learning Mandarin Chinese from just watching a TV show or watching the subtitles on their favorite movies, it takes more than just repetition to really learn Chinese - especially if you're not five years old anymore.

So how do I learn Chinese? I really like this one program called Rocket Chinese. The best part about Rocket Chinese is that it's inexpensive but still very effective in helping you learn Mandarin Chinese with very little effort.

You can also learn Chinese using Rosetta Stone. You're probably even more familiar with this program because of all the commercials you see on TV. It's a great program, no doubt, and one that I've even used myself. But its one drawback is the price. Rosetta Stone Mandarin Chinese ranges from anywhere between $200 to $500, depending on which version you purchase.

If you don't know which program you'll like better to solve your "how to I learn Chinese" conundrum, here's the lowdown:

Rosetta Stone Mandarin features more multimedia. In other words, you'll be matching sentences with pictures a majority of the time.

Rocket Chinese features more audio and hands-on learning. You might even say Rocket Chinese is more applicable to your daily life because you're not constantly going over the words for hats, hands and balls like you are in Rosetta Stone.

There's a place for each in learning Chinese - there's no doubt about that. But if you're a better visual learner, I recommend Rosetta Stone. If you're more attuned to audio and would like to fast-track your learning without spending a small fortune, then I recommend using Rocket Chinese.

And before I go, I thought I might teach you one Mandarin Chinese word to get you started. It's really easy, I promise.

Have you ever wanted to learn how to say "hello" in Chinese? Here you go!

The Mandarin Chinese term for "hello" is "ni hao." It's basically pronounced "Knee-how." See, that wasn't so hard!

How Do I Learn Chinese?

Let's pretend you have to go to China for a business trip. You really want to impress your employer, so you decide to learn some of the most common Chinese phrases. You ask yourself, how do I learn Chinese? It's such a tough language! How will I ever learn it in time?

As it turns out, you can learn the basics of Mandarin Chinese in a relatively short amount of time. Let's start with a really easy phrase. If you're just meeting someone for the first time, say "Ni hao!" This means "hi" in Mandarin Chinese. It's pronounced "Knee How." See how easy that was?

Okay, let's try the next one.

If you want to say "Thank you" in Mandarin, say "Shi shi." This one's pronounced "she she." See? That one was super-easy! Are you still asking yourself, how do I learn Chinese? Probably. Because these are the really easy ones and you're worried about the tougher Mandarin words.

Let's try a little harder one. How do I learn Chinese for "please?" you might wonder. This one is spelled, "Qing," but it's not pronounced "king." The "Q" basically makes a "ch" sound, so it sounds a little like "ching."

All you need to learn Chinese is to take things step by step. Start with easy, one-two syllable words that are easy to remember. In some programs, like Rosetta Stone, you look at pictures to figure out the answer. But that won't help you if you're in front of some Chinese businessmen who are glaring at you awaiting your next response.

That's why, to learn Chinese the right way, you should pick up a program that is heavily audio-based and will teach you the proper accent. That's what's missing in many language programs - teaching students the accent - and this is crucial to pronouncing Chinese words properly.

So how do I learn Chinese this way? Well, I can tell you the way I learned: with lots of repetition!

But that's not as boring as it might sound. Mandarin Chinese, above all, is fun to learn. That's right! I actually have fun learning Mandarin Chinese. That's because their language is so different from English and so rich in their culture. It's an experience just to hear their words and learn their alphabet.

Whoops. I let it slip.

Did you remember that Mandarin Chinese words are not written with the English alphabet? That one might have slipped your mind. But that's okay, because with the right learning language program, you will learn not only how to read the Mandarin alphabet, but how to write in the alphabet, too. That's an integral part of your learning process, and one you shouldn't ignore if you're wondering, "How do I learn Chinese quickly?"

So, step by step, let's go over what you need to do:

1. Determine how quickly you need to learn Mandarin Chinese. If you're not on a time schedule, that's even better.

2. Be willing to invest in learning Mandarin. Some programs, like Rosetta Stone, cost over $200, but you can buy a program that's just as good for less than $100.

3. Get ready to have fun! Keep an open mind as you learn. If you approach your lessons without grumbling or feeling negative about learning a new language, you're very likely to succeed!

Are you still wondering, " How do I learn Chinese?" If so, I think you'll benefit from reading about how to quickly learn Mandarin Chinese right here at http://www.squidoo.com/how-do-i-learn-chinese. After all, you shouldn't have to pay an arm and a leg to learn a language that one billion people learned for free in their own country!
